The campaign of the Hungarian Cyclists Club has come to an end, during which they managed to get MÁV Zrt. to consult every two months with the Hungarian Cyclists Club about the technical condition of the stations and the development of the cycling infrastructure!
During the campaign, the attention of commuters and MÁV was drawn to the difficulties of bicycle access to railway stations and the shortcomings of bicycle storage facilities. With the involvement of their members and followers, they developed professional recommendations for MÁV Zrt., ran an online campaign, organised a demonstration in Budapest, and launched a countrywide petition, which received signatures from more than 50 municipalities.
The railway and the bicycle go hand in hand: in order to cover longer distances, cyclists need to travel on fixed tracks, while for those who use the railway, the bicycle can shorten the journey time measured from door to door. Combining rail and bicycle alloys the advantages of using the car (speed, flexibility), thus making it a cheap, sustainable and healthy competitor for both short and long distances.
At the moment, barrier-free transportation for cyclists is not solved at most train stations in Budapest, the majority of stations do not have sufficient facilities for the proper storage of bicycles, and those arriving by bike cannot safely store their bicycles. With the successful campaign and the start of regular consultations with the MÁV, there is now an opportunity for change.
