Taking action against an increasingly repressive society is becoming increasingly difficult. Often, even citizens who find undemocratic institutions unacceptable do not believe in standing up for themselves. Others are deterred by a lack of knowledge of methods that work in illiberal societies. Others are afraid to take the leap because they feel alone.
The aim of the HCLU is to give motivation through the experience of a theatre game and the stories it tells, and adequate knowledge by the tools it presents, to students who have not yet known how to stand up for themselves. The long-term aim of the programs, organised with the artists of the Örkény Theatre in Budapest, Debrecen, Miskolc, Szeged and Pécs, is to get more young people to influence local decision-making.
The story of Protest is set in a dictatorial country, where a non-violent movement is confronting an unjust government decision. The audience become part of this movement and together they overcome the obstacles in their way to achieve their ultimate goal: the overthrow of the authoritarian regime and the advent of a democratic and peaceful world. To create a well-rounded campaign the performances will be complemented by rights awareness materials and film screenings related to movements in Hungary.
