Since the transition to democracy, government attention and resources for youth have been steadily decreasing. The 2011 Local Government Act mentions youth affairs as one of the compulsory tasks of the municipalities, but the scope of the task and the services to be provided, as well as the regulation of personnel, material and financial conditions, have not been developed. Youth opportunities are therefore the responsibility of the decision-makers and actors in local society in each municipality.
The aim of the initiative is therefore to create a building block for youth work in Békéscsaba. The central location is the Liget Youth Space. This is where the support to youth, the methodological training of young people and their adult partners for effective advocacy, autonomous action and social participation will take place; but it is also a platform for motivation, activation and the European dimension of local youth work.
The project also helps participants to take part in community life as individuals who respect themselves and others and know their rights, by creating small circles, communities and action groups in local society.
The initiative is implemented through four sub-programs:
- Konnekt: focusing on networking
- Praxis: aiming at empowerment, applying knowledge and experience gained in the community
- Capacity building: to strengthen consortium partners
- Publicity: aiming at visibility, communication, multiplication.
The initiative is successful if attitudes change and the passivity of "it's no use, it won't work" is replaced by the action of "I have rights, I stand up for myself and for others".
