An entrepreneur plans to open an open pit gravel mine in Pilismarót, in the heart of the Danube bend. The increased traffic, dust and noise from the ongoing extraction would threaten the right of people living in the area to a healthy environment and would have a harmful impact on groundwater, causing further drying out of the area. The investment would result in reduced property values and tourism, causing a significant loss of income for local residents. The mine's huge landscape damage would destroy the landscape of the Danube Bend and affect the population of the neighbouring settlements as well.
The association has been campaigning against the opening of the mine for three years, gathering expert opinions and mobilising all possible means to ensure that everyone is aware of the negative effects of the planned gravel mine. Despite all this, the mayor has stood up for the mine, and the association, together with three members of parliament, has launched a referendum initiative.
The referendum asked whether the council should reclassify the proposed area as a mining site. The referendum was invalid, but with a high turnout of 40.8%, the majority voted 'no' to the mine. After a short struggle, the council adopted the result of the referendum. Dunakéke has thus achieved its goal of not reclassifying the area and not starting mining in Pilismarót for at least a year.
