Through courses on communicative self-defence, the programme will ensure that Roma young people aged 14-22, teachers and other professionals who come into contact with young people and are affected by prejudice are equipped to deal with verbal conflicts. The programme will build a network of actors involved in the training and workshops and provide dissemination and development meetings (including on the protection of young people from other groups) to further spread of the methodology.
Teachers are often unprepared to deal with conflicts related to exclusion, and victims of attacks often respond with submission or aggression, which reinforces prejudices. The programme focuses primarily on Roma youth, but through their schools and other communities it has a wider impact and contributes to more cohesive and inclusive youth communities. When further developed and fine-tuned for other groups, the programme could also be used to promote the protection of other vulnerable groups. The methodology, which has been tested on around 200 young people, is based on non-violent communication and offers a cross-section of three fields of knowledge: drama education, communication and language approaches. Its aim is to apply solutions to these conflicts that allow the aggressor to get satisfaction, the bystanders to witness the events and to stand by the aggressor, so that force can calm the conflict and the aggressor can understand why their actions were hurtful through the responses they receive.
