Awareness of Roma rights project provides knowledge and tools to Roma groups in North-Eastern Hungary, aimed to empower them to take action to enforce their fundamental rights by recognising the violations committed against them. As a result, in the long run, more Roma people will be able to defend their rights to human dignity, equal treatment, education, social security, effective remedies and fair trial. The project develops seven Roma communities, whose daily lives - like many Roma groups in Hungary - are characterised by difficulties caused by a lack of information and the discriminatory behaviour of local institutions. During the consultancy, Roma community leaders are trained in each of the seven municipalities to address the individual problems of members of local Roma groups together, using rights and advocacy tools. An important part of this is to raise awareness of rights using a locally specific methodology. In addition to individual problems, it is also important to engage in community issues that respond to systemic problems affecting the whole community. The programme pilot implementation of the first community empowerment and advocacy process is planned in Nyíregyháza-Jósaváros. In addition to focusing on rights and advocacy, the project has a strong emphasis on organisational and community development and networking. As providing knowledge on rights and advocacy, the programme also focuses on community organizational skills for the involved leaders. Through networking, leaders and their communities are connected wherever possible, and their work is no longer done in isolation. This allows the communities involved to think together and solve the same problems together. Regular consultations, meetings and training ensure this.
In the long term, new knowledge and tools acquired in this way provide both local communities and the TASZ legal aid service with an effective method of providing legal aid.
