On the outskirts of Felsőcsatár there is a popular nature camp, owned by the municipality. However, the site was closed in 2022 for technical reasons - and renovation has been pending ever since. The Deep Forest Foundation has launched a campaign to save the camp. They wanted to get decision-makers to renovate and reopen it.
They organised demonstrations and tours to build community, and also campaigned online. Their petition was signed by 3,000 people and with the help of local people they raised more than one and a half million forints in donations. In their forums, they formulated proposals for the preservation of the camp and drew up a concept for its development, visiting decision-makers in person.
The Municipality of Szombathely has addressed the issue in several assemblies, and the representatives have committed themselves to the renovation of the camp in Felsőcsatár, allocating some funds for the purpose. Although this only covers a small part of the costs, the project has created a community around the camp that will facilitate further work and provide a good basis for strengthening cooperation between the local people and the municipality.
