In recent years, aggressive industrial development in Debrecen and its surroundings, implemented as key national economic investments, has prompted widespread local opposition. This programme has led to the establishment of several battery factories and associated companies in the county seat and nearby areas. These facilities pose numerous environmental risks, including threats to air and water quality, as well as significant water and energy demands. Hajdúböszörmény has also been affected, putting the Csorda Meadow—a remaining loess grassland of several tens of hectares and part of the town’s historical heritage—at risk.
Zöld Kör launched a campaign to inform local residents and protect the site’s natural values. The programme specifically engaged young people and farmers alongside the wider community. With public support, the naturally and scenically valuable area was granted local protection, and residents have become more open, sensitive, and actively involved in environmental issues.
